Stethoscope exams refer to the examination of patients with stethoscopes. Doctors use stethoscopes for assessing inner sounds such as heart murmurs, breathing sounds etc. Stethoscope exams enable a physician to assess the abnormalities of a patient’s heart, lungs and bowels.

The physical exam must be performed skillfully and thoroughly and it should provide emotional comfort to the patient. The following are the guidelines to be followed by a physician while attempting stethoscope exams: the physician’s room should be quiet and warm, for the patient to relax sufficiently. Hold the chest piece between your palms to warm it before placing it on the patient’s chest. Place the earpiece into your ears. Place the chest piece on the part of the body you want to listen to. To minimize outside noises, do not touch or rub the tubing or chest piece against any object. Listen carefully to the internal sounds which indicate the normal or abnormal functioning of a patient’s heart, lungs or bowels.

A physician can use single tube or double tube model of stethoscopes. Some physicians find it extremely difficult to subject children to stethoscope exams. To overcome this problem, some companies have introduced funny stethoscope covers to attract kids of all ages. These stethoscope covers in various colors include shapes of animals and cartoon characters. They serve to divert the attention of the kids, enabling the doctor to proceed with his examination.
